History Fieldtrip - Memories at Old Ford Factory... written account.

This is our first official class outing! Ok.... though there is also serious work to be done, nothing wrong with having fun at the same time.
I personally find it quite enriching especially the video which contains footage not seen in previous documentaries. Also, I find myself quite uninformed of the location where the British surrender took place. My history teacher didn't tell me that. Didn't have enough time to read through all the explanation of the exhibits because only half an hour was given. I hope you don't just take posey pictures of one another but do keep some pictures of the exhibits as it will remind you of the things you learn in this trip.
On a serious note, please try to see beyond history as an examination subject. There are a lot of valuable lessons we can learn from the past, like
  1. how bad living conditions can get in wartimes
  2. how people adapted and survived tough times
  3. war results in cruelty between man and man (These people were strangers living in different parts of the world but war force them together and one hurt/torture/kill the other just bcause they were on different sides of two warring countries.)

Conclusion: Humans behave like beasts in times of war. But ironically, war also brings out the will and strength of the human spirit. It is not that war is good, but the way people respond to it can be quite noble. I suppose the best thing to happen at any point of time is to toughen ourselves in peace time and not overindulge and get spoilt by luxuries of life because such things could be gone one day.

I'll post the pictures and the fun parts in a separate post, it is good to be reflective for now.

Speech Day Rehearsal: Good job!

Speech day participants,

Good job, but not well done.... why?

Because we need to know all these practices will boil down to the actual Speech Day. Let's stay focus for the Big Day.

Meanwhile, my admiration for those who were baked under the sun. If there was anything worse than standing under the sun (our parade participants) it would be standing FACING the sun (ask Nicole Tan: Our parade MC). Not forgetting both our "bai-kah" (limping) girls have braced themselves up and insisted not to miss the full-dress rehearsal.
Three cheers!

Wallowing in boredom? Try Contributing.

"A meaningful life is never measured by what you gained for yourself, rather it is a measure of what you have contributed."

No, I didn't say this, an 80 year-old famous writer did. You see, you don't have to live to 80 to realise this. Here is a man who has been there, done that, survived, come back alive to tell you its true! I heard this quote when I was about your age. It has changed my life tremendously.

Should you find your life lifeless, boring, uneventful, your dream is all about getting for yourself good grades, handphone upgrades, birthday wishes, new stuff and newer stuff for your collection... perhaps it is time to reconsider:

The truth is this, you will not really live until that self-centeredness is removed and put to death. Sounds profound? Maybe an example might help. Think about the happiest moment in your life. Chances are, you'll find yourself in the midst of contributing your life to a greater purpose. It is never so much about yourself.

Practical application:
  1. Don't just study and do your own homework. Help those who are seeking help. It sure beats going for tuition. When you teach, you give. When you study or go for tuition, you receive and it is always more blessed to give than to receive.
  2. When you feel bored and tired, go and help a person in need.
  3. Stop wallowing about how boring your life is, how boring are your lessons etc... I think the best medicine to cure boredom is your selfless participation.

I hope this will help you. You don't need to wait till you are 80 years old (I'll be 101 by then) to affirm what I say is true.

Anti-Boredom

Bored huh?

Try the following activities at home:

1) When was the last time you draw your family portrait? Maybe it is time to draw it again. It brings people together. If you don't think you can draw well, just draw and admire it yourself.
2) Write a poem using the letters of your (or somebody's) name

Hands-on activities:
3) If you have ant problem at home, drop something sweet as a bait and wait for the trail to appear. Follow the trail to the hideout and exterminate them with insecticide.
4) Use two and a half toothpick and glue together so that it resembles an aeroplane. Catch some flies in a bottle. I read somewhere that if you catch a few flies in a bottle and put them in a freezer for a few minutes, they will "go to sleep". While they are sleeping, you glue their legs to your toothpick aeroplane wings and wait for them to wake up. Legend has it that you will get a mini aeroplane. I haven't tried because it is too troublesome and too dirty and too sadist.

As for me, I blog when I'm bored, that's why you are reading this now. Anyway, feel free to share your anti-boredom strategies.

Happy holidays

PTC: FT's afterthoughts.

2 hours, 30 parents, averaging 4 minutes per pupil. First, my apologies if the session was too brief especially to those who waited so long for such a short meeting, please convey my apologies and admiration for parents of Weishen, Jian Cheng, Sok Kuan etc...

Typical session goes like this: Hello Mr/Mrs ---- Nice to meet you, this is your child's result for this term.... I have set targets for him/her because it does not make much sense for a bright pupil like him/her to be aiming for just pass, so these are the results against the target....good, good, a bit below.... results are good/on the right track/can expect more.... socially speaking, he/she is in good company, the classmates are really nice people.... your child is..... Is there anything you need me to take note of in the future? No? Ok, in that case I just want to thank you for coming, sorry for the short time, I wish to have more time but the queue is rather long, please feel free to contact me when you need to know anything, thank you... have a nice day.

I don't know what you guys think but it wasn't easy to stay focus, very often my mind is still lingering on the previous person when the next is in front of me. Then there were minor requests and incidences happening, some of you fooling around in full view of observing parents (yeah... sometimes you were not aware how many pairs of eyes were looking). A slip of tongue, and there! one negative remark blurted out from me and it triggered a landslide of complains from the parent, you looked away in disgust and at that moment I knew I had let a child down. Didn't I promise to stay positive? Meanwhile, parent rattled on... I could sense the disappointment in you. Tried to say a couple of nice things but its too late, the damage is done. For most of you, I guess the day went well. Especially that cheeky smile just before you left but my concern still dwell with the one that went away upset over the experience.

At the end of the day, I wish I had more time to spare but I was the last to finish already. Tired, talked too much until it is becoming a professional hazard. I was glad school holidays is just round the corner. Come to think of it, I should consider myself fortunate as some others will be involved in band camp. And so I paid the band camp a visit before I left.

Fruitful day.
