Friends: Michael W.Smith (1997)

Packing up the dreams God planted
In the fertile soil of you
Can't believe the hopes He's granted
Means a chapter in your life is through
But we'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone
'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

Chorus:
And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And a friend will not say "never"
'Cause the welcome will not end
Though it's hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long to live as friends.

With the faith and love God's given
Springing from the hope we know
We will pray the joy you'll live in
Is the strength that now you show

But we'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone
'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

Chorus

And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And a friend will not say "never"
'Cause the welcome will not end
Though it's hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long to live as friends.

One Class, one lifetime

If life is a journey, a year with 2A is like a bus trip. It started with people from four different places converging into this one bus. Some board the bus with feelings of uncertainty, others with a sense of unjust but all to a certain extent, expectations.

What sort of journey will this turn out to be?

First, there was silence, prolonged silence

I guess it all began with a few well wishes, birthday greetings and some whacky drama and projects I began to see colours appearing in the dull grey we were getting used to. Oh yes, we had a go at a class photo. To Cherylene: Thank you my dear Vice-chair, you gave the class blog a bright start. It's a pity that towards the end you kind of "faded" but I remember that bright and cheery start and really thank you for starting the ball rolling, I long to see bright and cheery Cherylene coming back.

Then it was speech day rehearsals, many of you were juniors taking big roles. I don't know how others felt, it was then I first sense the pride of being the Form Teacher of this class.

First class outing: We managed to visit Ford Factory and had a fruitful history lesson.

Thank you Miss Song!

April was a busy month, speech day parade was a huge success. The distinction award won at the marching band assessment was really memorable in more ways than one.

Thank you Amanda, Desylia, Jasmine, Egan, Eben and Guan Shin, I dedicate the month of April to you.

Then it was May: Exams, Sec 2 camp and please don't forget the birth of the class T-shirt and class motto. We cheered, we played, we ran in the rain when it poured mercilessly during our campfire.

Thank you Ivan, Prasana, Xing Yoong and Cheryl Yuen. There's no class tee like 2A's because it was really a product of team effort from designing, making to distributing. I'm not surprised that the end product is something you all can be proud of. Also to Chin Din for handling the finances, you're my fantastic treasurer.

June, while enjoying our holidays, we managed to organise CIP at IMH. IMH expects volunteers to be above sixteen, none of you were, but with good faith and sincerity, we spend a meaningful afternoon drawing comics and printing fingerprints.

Thank you Xing Yoong, Prasana, Cheryl Yuen, Jiayu, Joanne, Ivan, Jian Cheng, Chin Din, Glenda and Wanqin.

July, the job was not over for the 10 named above. At LOCD, we had to do a presentation and set up a booth to share our experience at IMH. Then it was the BIG one, SL investiture. Some 16 of you were part of the investiture. I posted a blog entry on "Service and Sacrifice", the official class photo was taken with three of your favourite teachers. It was then I had the urgency of fulfilling the class photo dream.

To Prefects: Thank you, it was never meant to be easy. Along the way many of you have contemplated quitting. Thank you for struggling, for sleepless nights, for taking unjustified punishment, for tears of grief and frustration and most importantly, thank you for overcoming and coming out stronger each time. You grit your teeth not for yourself, but for your fellow prefect who would be worse off if you decide to let go.

August, I left the school for three weeks and realised how much a class can be missed. You burst into life in the bossa ball competition... didn't win, but who says you have to win to enjoy the game? August also marks Teachers' Day Celebration. "Miss Latha, we love you more than Maths Tutor!"

Thank you Sok Kuan and gang: You managed to forge a rather special bond with Miss Latha. Thank you Exco: You did the noticeboard and the Olympic display on your own.

September, perhaps everyone knew that the end is near, every kindness is appreciated more, and here I would like to bring to your attention...

Blog administrators, we clocked 100 posts! Well done. I have said this before and I will say again, Glenda post in our class blog more than her own. Often with lesson materials and reminders of tests and birthday wishes and words of encouragement.

October, I have seen stressful exam seasons turn really nasty before but exam season with you people is most pleasant... both mid-year and end-of-year. Read the "Invigilator's Diary". I will remember the well wishes and "Best (pronounced with "r" between "B" and "e") of luck".

Thanks Nicole Sim, you did what nobody see, sweeping the classroom to prepare the class for exams. The month of October is dedicated to you.

We were all reeling back in memory during post exam, have heard countless of appeals to turn back time... or to extend this experience for another year... as for me, I busied myself with compiling photos... watch this:

That's my way of appreciating every single one of you from Afrina to Tan Wei Shen.

Allow me to thank three more persons, if I could put an exclamation mark beside "Excellent" conduct, I would have done it.

To

Glenda: For putting up the blog picture, the song, and the encouragements. You are my "emergency button" who can be relied on for urgent matters. If 2A has hands, you are the left hand.

Cheryl Yuen: The one who made the difference between "can" and "cannot". If 2A has hands, you must be the right hand.

Nicole Tan: You have more than a fair share of personal problems but the difference is that you have rose above your troubles with relentless fighting spirit. I still remember you doing your Speech Day rehearsal MC with a limp. If 2A has a heart, it must have been you giving away yours.

I know when you hugged onto 2A's pillar you really mean it.

So... as the bus arrived at the last stop, you will all alight and proceed on with your journey, I will too be driving a different route next year, perhaps I may see some of you again but in any case I have enjoyed myself in the year 2008.

Thank you class, may God bless you.

The dreaded subject option.

Troubled? Fret not! Follow the following rules:
  1. Good in Math and Science: Choose E1/E2 because you'll double your strong subjects.
  2. Good in Math, poor in Science: Choose E3 and pick A. Math. It will double your Math without being burdened by weak science.
  3. Good in Science, poor in math: Choose E3 to avoid double math. Just do well in one science. Then from the cocktail of Lit/POA/ART choose one, just don't choose Amath. Alternatively, choose E1/E2 and be ready to get squeezed by A math. Occasional squeezing may produce quality brain juices.
  4. Poor in math, poor in science: Whatever you choose, just don't choose E1/E2. As I have said to the class earlier "What is worse than failing Math and Science?" Answer: Failing them twice.

Lastly, allow D&T teacher to indulge himself with some sales talk: It would be nice if my own form class would choose D&T. Please give it a serious thought, it is a wonderful subject.

2nd in best CIP team contest (sec 2)

Meanwhile....
Award and acknowledgement is still coming in.(Don't be mistaken, Jian Cheng is wearing shorts even though it looks like pants.)

As I recall our IMH encounter, there are a few names to highlight

  1. Those who attended hours of service learning training
  2. Those who overcome their fear at the IMH to serve
  3. Those who bought display board
  4. Those who made display boards into presentation boards
  5. The one who had to do the talking in front of the judges
  6. Those who took down the boards and sent them back to school

I changed my mind... let the names ring within ourselves.

You are appreciated.

Time is running out.

I'm not referring to studying for exams.

Time for 2A 08 is running out. While preparing for your exams, don't forget to take a deep breath and immerse yourself in the atmophere of this class. The faces, the fixtures, the classroom and its colours... It won't feel the same when time finally runs out in less than a month's time. The memory is yours to keep.

End-of-year Exams: Diary of an Invigilator

The class is absolutely focused and purposeful in doing well in this exams, I'm glad
  • not because exam results will be good
  • not because I will have an easy time invigilating
  • not because I can present my class as a model for others to follow

BUT

  • because you have a purpose and you are fulfilling that purpose as a pupil by being serious with your exams.

The purpose of a pupil is to study hard and learn all that is good from one another including teachers. When you serve your purpose, you will never feel bored or lonely. The reverse is also true. There are many pupils out there who have forgotten why they are here, they have lost their way and get into trouble. Maybe we should have more sympathy than dislike for these people. Some are your friends. Do you lead these people to their actual purpose? Or you let them tell you what to do and you follow them?

You have my blessings for the rest of your exam papers.

Get well!

You know... Ivan, Jiayu and Joanne are our three "Guardians at the Gates". Their attendance are usually "assumed present" by me.

But today, only Jiayu came. Ivan and Joanne are sick on the same day. Hope it hasn't been too stressful for Jiayu to handle the latecomers without her two classmate-friends.

Ivan and Joanne,

have a good rest for tomorrow it will be exams. (That goes out to all those not at 100% health at this time) Balance study and rest to get the most out of exams. Stay cool.

Weee...Science project work during school hours ;)

Happy birthday Egan!!!
May all your dreams come true!!!

:) smile always!!!

E-learning day special... 19th Sep 2008

Since today is e-learning day, I thought you may probably drop by the class blog. I captured this screen shot:

quite a crowded scene on msn... I hope you had fun doing the lesson modules and even more fun chatting with friends. Well... at least I had chatting with some of you.

I also hope that you appreciate and thank your teachers for the effort putting up these lessons. If you think doing them is difficult, think loading them up... Especially some who have gone through a lot of training and learning just to make this possible.

Final Term Sec 2

Dear class,

Sometimes I wonder is it real, that we have completed 3 terms of 2008. In a day's time, we'll be entering into the final term.

Like it or not, this is it, term 4:
  • Boys, your days of wearing shorts are numbered
  • Some subjects will see it's last days... example Design and Technology (do I have a problem with that??)

I guess such are trival as compared to:

  • Friends, close friends and most unfortunately new friends made over the course of the year, has to separate ways.
  • Teachers who has gone through with you good times and rough patches, earning your respect only in this last lap will probably not teach you next year.
  • What about this classroom, table arrangement and every small detail that perhaps only you know.

So, in the midst of your busy study schedules, remember to take a few moments to enjoy the atmosphere of being in this class, collect as many memories as you can. There is only one 2A 2008 in Yuying history and you're part of it.

One word says it all: Cherish.

I will.

Will you?

Back after 3 weeks.

I have been wondering what is the first thing that I should talk about after 3 weeks of absence. It turn out to be rather unsurprising as it has nothing to do with my absence. Instead, it is about the time of the year: I realise the first End-of-Year paper is exactly one month away. I shall not harp about the implications... One thing though, crazy as it may sound, I still believe that study can be enjoyable if you learn to look at it from a different perspective. How? Come speak to me.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Hello all! (:
I just decided to update the blog since I was rather bored? Hahahha
Anyway, Nicole Tan, you've been linked.

National Day 2008

I don't have much time to post but I'm glad the National Day theme song in 2002 had summed up my thoughts for you. The song is titled: We'll Get There. Written by Dick Lee (You'll remember him as the man who judged in Singapore Idol, he usually speaks first.)

We Will Get There
Music & Lyrics: Dick Lee

Sung by: Stefanie Sun
Remember the days, we set out together with faith?
Remember the times, so fine, when we thought that
Nothing could stand in our way?

Then things weren't the same, the life that we knew had to change
We've struggled through, the darkest storms
We thought we couldn't tame

Together we've tried, as we stood side by side
I knew we'd build a new world
A world of hope for ever after

Chorus:
Deep in my heart I just know
Right from the start, we will grow
Look where we are, we've come so far
And there's still a long, long way to go

With all of my heart, I will care
I'll play my part, I will share
With family and friends, together we'll stand
And in the end, hand in hand
We will get there

So now we begin, working together to win
Believing in trust, it must
Be possible to overcome anything

There's so much to do, there's so much we can contribute
By sharing just a little love
We will start again anew

So why don't we try? If we stand side by side
I know we'll build a new world
A world of hope for ever after

Happy National Day
....and I miss school. (Who is "school" by the way??)
....ok. I miss you, each one of you.
