Graduation Day 2010

2A 2008...

Fast forward 2 years. 2010: Graduation day. This is it, after all the sweat and tears I get to see you graduate (O levels shouldn't be a problem to all of you... it is just the quality of passes we're talking about).

No fanfare, no hugs and kisses. Just a warm handshake, a sincere regard and a few decent pictures.

I like it this way.

National Day 090810

I have decided to post every 25 hits... since this is 75 and National day, here I go...

Some of you will go to JC next year, some of you won't

For those who are not going to JC I don't think the Poly will do anything to gather people together to celebrate National Day, you'll have to find ways to celebrate it yourself. I like this year's theme, "Live our dream, Fly our flag". I realised that whatever we go through in this country we call home, we need to realise that this is a place that is able to help us fulfill our dreams. Our dreams and aspiration may be more difficult to achieve should we be born somewhere else. There are
so many war torn countries in this world,
so many poor countries with impoverished people
so many corrupted government that only the rich can fulfill their dreams
so many racially discriminating places that you need to be a certain race to excel
although many other places boast majestic natural wonders and Singapore has none, I'm thankful that as a Singaporean, I can go to anywhere in this world and see these places because the Singpore Passport is welcomed all over the world.

As a secondary school pupil, you may feel little about Singapore, sometimes even resentful. The thing is, just like how I felt when I was a teenager who protested aircon bus services costly and impractical, there are many things to be thankful for. We all need to open our eyes to see them. With age and experience, you'll appreciate all these things better in the future.

Being a school teacher, I'm already living my dream, a dream I had since sec 3. My father is a construction worker, my mother worked in a factory nightshift (10pm - 7am) for 20 years. In other places, you need many generations to reverse poverty. But here, you can do it within your own generation.

What's your dream? Go ahead and fulfill it, there's no better place to do it than in this country.

Happy National Day.

Thank you prefects.

Prefects investiture.

The whole point about the race is not winning but completing.

The purpose of the fight is not in the victory but the struggle.

Prefects, be glad not because of the praise and honour that came in today but the fact that you have lasted the hardship, the journey.

Life is not about glory and honour. It is about completing what you have started and fulfilling your promises.

Prefects, you did it.

Countdown to "O" levels

Hey people,

It is time to get ready for the big one ahead. How is everyone getting on?

I long to see you all when school reopens. Even though it means no more holidays and more work.

Meanwhile, take care and may God bless you all.

Before I go, let me share with you a rainbow over my flat.

Courage

It takes courage to visit this blog now.

I hope you are coping fine.

There's a song, the lyrics goes like this:

I am not skilled to understand
What God has willed
What God has planned...

I don't know what else to say except this:

Take care.

Farewell.

Beloved Egan,

Didn't expect you to journey home so soon.
But I'm sure you're in the safe hands of your Father.

I will always remember you for making the class T-shirt so special with your artistic touch.

May you bring this and all the 2A memories with you home.

You'll be missed by all.

Lost time.

Dear all,

I think mid April is a good time for me to slot in this post. Not too late.

I have been around long enough. I see this every year. By April, many will settle down to study, either alone or small groups. They ask each other serious question, they want to make sure they can answer questions when the exam comes. Sometimes they slow down a little, sometimes they dash even through the night to finish chapters.

Meanwhile, another group is totally unaffected, they play ball, football, basketball... they find lessons don't make sense and do nothing to clarify. They like going out with friends. They mix with people who don't bother about their own results and even less concerned about yours. They leave it till tomorrow, they hate teachers' warning (labelled: NAGGING).

Below is the profile of pupils of what they did before and after exams...

Student D:
Played basketball till 7 almost everyday, broke a finger, MC for a while and back playing basketball. Common excuse: de-stress. Consequence: Can't get into Poly, don't want ITE, so repeat.

Student N:
Played street soccer all the way, even during O levels. Not a moment of study. When I ask, the reply was just a smile and it is back to street soccer. Student N recently commented on facebook wall: "I don't like how everyone is starting school/orientation when i'm not even close to that"

Student S:
"hey, i dont even get into any shit. im just waiting till i get call up (NS) and get raped by guys."

My plea to you: Make a difference while you still can. Other things can wait. The school will be organising night study soon, make full use of it.

Did someone complain bored? Or don't know what to do?

2010

Doesn't seem too long ago when Mr Tay welcomed you all and declared you to be the batch to witness the school's 100th anniversary. Well... here you are, 3 years later and the final hurdle lies at the horizon. "2A"... has it become a distant past? (have you outgrown your class T-shirt?)With classes renamed E1, E2, E3.... things aren't quite the same these days.

However, some things still remain the same, for some, I'm still your FT. This blog is still here for you to reminisce the good times we had as a class. This brings me to the whole point about this post: I hope you'll visit this place once in a while to catch up with one another. Let us know your latest whereabouts. In due time you'll graduate from this place, don't forget to tag about your posting etc... boys... let us know your enlistment and girls... your wedding day. The list goes on. I will continue to open my house on the second day of Chinese New Year and hoping to catch up with you all.

Back to the present, I want to wish you with a million blessings in the days to come. May you sustain your hardworking efforts and get results you'd never dream of... maybe straight "A"s is not an impossible dream when you put your whole heart into it. For anyone who is willing to strive hard to achieve their goals is already a winner in their own right.

Together, achieve personal excellence.

May God bless you.
